Gobetti 101, I-40129 Bologna, Italy Received 18 December 2002 / Accepted 13 February 2003 We describe a simple but effective iterative procedure specifically designed to destripe Q and U Stokes parameter data as those collected by the SPOrt experiment onboard the International Space Station (ISS). The method is general enough to be useful for other experiments, both in polarization and total intensity. The only requirement for the algorithm to work properly is that the receiver knee frequency must be lower than the signal modulation frequency, corresponding in our case to the ISS orbit period. Detailed performances of the technique are presented in the context of the SPOrt experiment, both in terms of added rms noise and residual correlated noise. cosmic microwave background – Polarization – Cosmology: observations – Methods: data analysis – Methods: numerical C. Sbarra et al. introduction Low frequency noise is known to affect all radiometers and to induce correlations among successive samples of the measured signal, leading to typical striping effects when producing sky maps. It is characterised by a power-law spectrum S(f) ∝ (1/f), with β roughly in the range 1 ÷ 2.5 depending on the noise source. The total instrumental noise power spectrum is usually specified in terms of the knee frequency, fk, at which the white and low frequency components of the noise are equal: equation S(f)=σ 0 [ 1 + (fkf) β ] eq : noiseps

Destriping cosmic microwave background polarimeter data

Destriping is a well-established technique for removing low-frequency correlated noise from Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) survey data. In this paper we present a destriping algorithm tailored to data from a polarimeter, i.e. an instrument where each channel independently measures the polarization of the input signal. We also describe a fully parallel implementation in Python released as Ope...

Making CMB temperature and polarization maps with Madam

MADAM is a CMB map-making code, designed to make temperature and polarization maps of time-ordered data of total power experiments like Planck. The algorithm is based on the destriping technique, but it also makes use of known noise properties in the form of a noise prior. The method in its early form was presented in an earlier work by Keihänen et al. (2005). In this paper we present an update...

Destriping CMB temperature and polarization maps

We study destriping as a map-making method for temperature-and-polarization data for cosmic microwave background observations. We present a particular implementation of destriping and study the residual error in output maps, using simulated data corresponding to the 70 GHz channel of the Planck satellite, but assuming idealized detector and beam properties. The relevant residual map is the diff...

A Simple and Robust Destriping Algorithm for Imaging Spectrometers: Application to Modis Data

Images provided by several imaging spectrometers are often contaminated with stripes. This artifact compromises the visual quality and radiometric integrity of measured data. Although a large number of destriping algorithms have been recently suggested, most of them provide results that display residual stripes if not strong distortion from the original signal. To overcome this issue, we introd...

Effects of Destriping Errors on CMB Polarisation Power Spectra and and Pixel Noise Covariances

Low frequency detector noise in CMB experiments must be corrected to produce faithful maps of the temperature and polarization anisotropies. For a Planck-type experiment the low frequency noise corrections lead to residual stripes in the maps. Here I show that for a ring torus and idealised detector geometry it is possible to calculate analytically the effects of destriping errors on the temper...
